Intro To Tech Options
There are a number of course options to learn the dive skills necessary for technical diving, including going straight into the PADI Tec 40 or TDI Decompression Procedues courses - after meeting all the prerequisite criterea, certifications and experience of course!
However, due to the increased demands of technical diving and for a better learning experience, it may be best to take a more progressive approach with an introduction to technical diving through a course dedicated to learning the skills in either a double cylinder backmount (twinset) or sidemount configuration - especially when wanting to progress to decompression diving.
Intro To Tec On Backmount
The TDI Intro To Tech and PADI Tec Basics courses are mostly aimed at divers who want to start learning how to tech dive using backmounted double tanks or for technically trained sidemount divers who want to transition over to backmount.

- Technical Equipment Preparation
- Detailed dive planning
- Predive checks / procedures
- Entries & exits in tech equipment
- Surface buoyancy & weight checks
- Safety drills & visual checks
- Regulator recovery & exchange
- Mask removal, replacement & clearing
- Hovering & refining buoyancy / trim
- Using multiple finning techniques
- Managing multiple tanks & gases
- Valve shutdown procedures/drills
- Out of gas / gas sharing procedures
- DSMB deployment
- DSMB & controlled free ascents
- Good buoyancy & trim throughout
- Problem management & procedures
- Buddy/team awareness & communication

Intro To Tec On Sidemount
Divers who already have a recreational sidemount diving certification can also take the TDI Intro To Tech or PADI Tec Basics course to learn the additional basic skills required for technical diving but in a sidemount configuration.
Skills covered in either of these introductory tech courses would be the same as those previously listed above - the only small differences being in the equipment assembly, gas management and shutdown procedure, due to using sidemount gear.
