PADI Trimix Course Options
You can learn to use Trimix as your primary breathing gas during the PADI Tec 40, Tec 45, or Tec 50 courses. In addition to the knowledge and dive skills learned on each of these decompression courses, you'll be taught how to analyze Trimix blends, label cylinders, plan dives and program dive computers appropriately.
Even at just 40m, there's a noticeable increase in effort required to breathe air. At this depth, the density of the inhaled air already exceeds the recommended maximum of 5.2 g/l. Diving at 45m pushes that air density past the critical upper limit of 6.3 g/l, further increasing respiratory effort. Using Trimix on either the Tec 40 or Tec 45 course provides significant benefits - even before considering how it mitigates gas narcosis.
At 50m, air density increases to around 7.2 g/l - way past the upper limit! Even in a relaxed state, you can really feel the extra exertion required to draw air through the regulator. So, if you haven't already opted for Trimix on previous levels, enroll in the Trimix option for the PADI Tec 50 course.
PADI Tec 40, 45 & 50 Trimix Courses
At a depth of 50 meters, normal air exceeds both the recommended and absolute maximum density limits for a breathing gas (5.2 g/l and 6.3 g/l respectively - air at this depth reaches 7.2 g/l). The high workload of breathing such dense gas is not only uncomfortable but introduces significant risks, including an elevated chance of decompression sickness due to carbon dioxide retention.
The risk of gas narcosis at 50m is also quite substantial. Problems can manifest or worsen due to impaired judgment caused by that narcotic effect.
Choosing Trimix for these technical courses requires no additional in-water diving skills. It simply involves extra theory - which is already included in your eLearning - and minor adjustments to a few practical skills.
You can select the Trimix option during any PADI Tec 40, 45, or 50 course. While learning to use Trimix remains the same, you will gain the most benefit at the Tec 50 level. If you are already Tec 50 certified, you can also enroll in a Tec 50 Trimix upgrade.
