Technical Diving In Phuket

Phuket offers excellent conditions for both technical diver training and experienced technical divers. Warm water, year-round diving, deep reefs, wrecks, overhead environments and excellent local infrastructure make it one of Southeast Asia's most versatile technical diving destinations.

Deep Diving

Racha Noi offers year-round access to deep boulder reefs ideal for technical diver training. Usually warm clear water at many sites and depths well beyond recreational limits provide excellent conditions for decompression diving courses and experience-building dives.

Technical Wreck Diving

Phuket has several wrecks suitable for different levels of technical training. The ship wrecks at Racha Yai provide an excellent environment for learning wreck procedures, while the famous King Cruiser Wreck offers a much larger wreck with opportunities for more advanced wreck penetration with appropriate training & experience.

Caverns & Cave Diving

The Phi Phi Islands feature numerous caverns and caves that are excellent for introducing overhead environment skills. Nearby Krabi also offers more complex freshwater cave systems for qualified cave divers and cave diving training.

Experienced Technical Instructors

Phuket is home to instructors teaching a wide range of technical diving courses through several internationally recognised training agencies. From introductory technical courses through to advanced decompression, sidemount, wreck and cave training, divers can continue developing their skills from one location.

Equipment, Gas & Support Services

Technical divers benefit from excellent local support, including equipment suppliers, twinset and stage cylinder rental, oxygen and helium blending, equipment servicing and experienced dive operators familiar with technical diving requirements.

Diver Medical Facilities

Phuket provides access to excellent medical facilities, including specialist diving medicine and a modern multi-place hyperbaric chamber operated by the SSS Network. Having this level of support nearby offers additional peace of mind for technical diving activities.

Easy Logistics

International flights, quality accommodation, reliable transport and a mature diving industry make Phuket an easy destination for both short technical diving holidays and longer training programmes.

Decompression Diving Phuket

Whether on a fun dive tour for some deep open-circuit decompression diving, taking an introduction to tech on your first technical diving course, adapting your current technical diver level to diving on sidemount, or adding another rebreather unit to your existing certifications, Phuket is perfectly placed to cater to many aspects of technical diving.

What Is Technical Diving?

When most recreational divers first enquire about technical diving, they usually mean decompression diving - going beyond recreational depth / time limits, on dives requiring decompression stops before safely returning to the surface, most likely using multiple gases to help speed-up the off-gassing of nitrogen.

However, technical diving actually encompasses many forms of diving that takes a diver's experience beyond the limits of recreational diving.

Technical diving includes:

  • Decompression Diving (with or without multiple gases)
  • Overhead Environment Diving
    • Wreck Diving*
    • Cave and Cavern Diving*
    • Mine Diving
    • Ice Diving
  • Rebreather Diving
    • Semi-Closed Rebreathers (SCR)*
    • Closed-Circuit Rebreathers (CCR)*
  • Extended No-Decompression Diving Using Multiple Gases

* Some of these activities also exist in recreational forms, although they are considerably more limited in scope than their technical diving equivalents.

Which Technical Diving Course Is For You?

If you're looking for a technical diving course because you want to:

  • Dive deeper than 40 metres (130 feet)
  • Go beyond no-decompression limits
  • Use multiple breathing gases (air, nitrox and oxygen)
  • Dive using Trimix (oxygen, nitrogen and helium)

Then decompression diving is the type of technical diving you'll need to learn.

Which Technical Diving Course Should You Take First?

Perhaps a decompression diving course, such as the PADI Tec 40 course or the TDI Decompression Procedures course (in combo with Advanced Nitrox), should be the first main technical diving course that you learn!

The buoyancy, finning & general dive skills will be invaluable in all furture open-circuit tech courses. Plus, when wreck, mine and cave diving, it's quite possible that you'll need to use decompression procedues and multiple gasses to do those dives!
